Fillings

Fillings

Are your teeth sensitive to heat or cold – or painful when you eat or drink? These are symptoms of tooth decay or fracture. Fillings are needed to restore the tooth, protect the nerve and reduce the risk of root canal treatment.

At Newport Road Dental Clinic we offer a wide range of materials and preventative techniques – the most common are composite fillings, amalgam fillings and fissure sealants.

Composite Fillings

Composite fillings are made of a tooth-coloured material which we match to the colour of your natural teeth, repairing them to a healthy condition; they are aesthetic, strong and functional. Composite materials can also be used to close gaps between teeth and cosmetically altering the shape of teeth, this is called composite build-up.

Amalgam Fillings

Although they are sometimes referred to as silver fillings, dental amalgam is made from a combination of mercury, silver, tin and copper and has been used for many years as a popular hard-wearing filling material.

The main disadvantages of amalgam fillings are:

Their unnatural colour

In order to make a large enough space to hold an amalgam filling the healthy structure of the tooth is compromised

Concerns about the effects of Mercury and possible allergies

Amalgam-Free Fillings

We can replace your mercury amalgam fillings with a natural tooth colour composite material which is mercury-free and which will match the colour of your teeth and enhance your smile.

Fissure Sealants

Pits and fissures are the names for the natural bumps in teeth. Fissure sealant is a clear, safe, plastic coating which is applied, and sealed with a bright light, to protect the tooth as a preventative measure. This popular procedure is suitable for both children and adults.
